History of the Shih Tzu

The word Shih Tzu means "Little Lion." The breed can be traced back to China around 600 AD. The breeds' ancestors can be traced back to breeds of dogs from Tibet.

In the early twentieth century, the breed was brought to England, Norway and Ireland, where they were breed.

It was this introduction of the breed into Europe that saved it. During the Communist take over of China, the breed was seen as a status symbol of the elite and was destroyed.

The modern American Shih Tzu breed can trace its heritage back to these few dogs that were brought to Europe in the early twentieth century.
